Wagering requirements explained
A wagering requirement is the total amount you must bet before a bonus, or the winnings from it, can be withdrawn, expressed as a multiple of the bonus amount or of your deposit plus the bonus. A 35x requirement on a $100 bonus means $3,500 in total bets. That single sentence in the terms determines whether an offer is worth anything, and the math behind it is short enough to do in your head.
Bonus-only vs deposit plus bonus
The base the multiplier applies to matters as much as the multiplier itself. A 35x requirement on the bonus alone turns a $100 bonus into $3,500 of required turnover. Apply the same 35x to deposit plus bonus after a $100 deposit and the turnover doubles to $7,000 for the identical headline offer. Operators know most players compare multipliers and skip the base, which is why the two formats coexist. The expected cost of clearing
Every dollar you wager pays the house edge on average, so the expected cost of clearing a requirement is simply turnover multiplied by edge. Take the $100 bonus at 35x, cleared on a 96% RTP slot: $3,500 of turnover at a 4% edge costs an expected $140. You were given $100 and the grind is expected to consume $140 of it, so the offer is worth roughly minus $40 before any other restriction applies. The break-even point is where bonus value equals turnover times edge: $100 divided by $3,500 is about 2.86%, so you would need a game returning above 97.14% for this particular offer to carry positive expected value. Game weighting quietly multiplies the number
Contribution tables are where reasonable-looking requirements become unreasonable. Slots usually count 100%, while table and live games often contribute 5% or 10%; BitStarz, for instance, counts table and live play at 5%. At 5% weighting, clearing $3,500 of required turnover means placing $70,000 in actual bets. A 35x requirement has effectively become 700x. If you intend to clear a bonus on blackjack or baccarat, the low house edge of those games rarely compensates for the weighting penalty, and some terms exclude them from wagering entirely.
The max-bet trap
Nearly every bonus caps your stake while wagering is active, commonly around $5 or the crypto equivalent (BitStarz sets it at 5 EUR/USD or 0.00006 BTC, among other denominations). The trap is that the penalty for breaching it is usually forfeiture of the bonus and all winnings, and enforcement happens retroactively at withdrawal, not when you place the bet. The software rarely stops you from staking $20 on a spin; it simply records that you did. Check the cap before the first spin and stay under it for the entire clearing period, not just while bonus funds are visibly in play.
How volatility interacts with clearing
Two strategies exist for grinding through turnover. Low-volatility, high-RTP slots keep your balance close to the expected path, which maximizes the chance of finishing the requirement with something left; the cost is that you almost never finish far ahead. High-volatility games turn the bonus into a lottery ticket: most attempts bust before the turnover is complete, and a few finish with a multiple of the bonus. Before you opt in
- Identify the base: bonus-only or deposit plus bonus. The difference is a factor of two or more.
- Multiply turnover by the house edge of the game you will actually play. If that exceeds the bonus value, the offer is negative EV.
- Check the contribution table for your game, the max bet while wagering, and the expiry window.
