Are bonus buys worth it?

A bonus buy lets you pay a fixed multiple of your stake, typically 60x to 2,000x, to trigger a slot's feature round immediately instead of waiting for it to land. The honest answer to whether that is "worth it" lives in a number providers sometimes publish and players rarely read: the separate RTP of the buy itself.

What providers actually publish

Where a studio lists feature-buy RTP separately, the figures are usually close to the base game, occasionally a little higher. Pragmatic Play's Sweet Bonanza 1000 is a clean example: the base game is published at 96.53% RTP, the standard free-spins buy at 96.52% and the 500x super buy at 96.55%. Practically identical prices per dollar wagered. Nolimit City spreads its numbers wider: San Quentin xWays lists 96.03% for the base game, 96.26% for the 100x and 400x buys, and 96.95% for the 2,000x buy. Other Nolimit pages, such as Outsourced, publish a single 96.08% figure with no per-buy breakdown at all. When no separate figure is published, the correct assumption is that buying confers no RTP advantage.

The EV framing

RTP is a rate, not an amount, and bonus buys change the amount dramatically. A 100x buy at 96.5% RTP has an expected loss of 3.5 units per click: exactly the same loss rate per dollar as the base game, applied to one hundred spins' worth of turnover in a single decision. Even San Quentin's "generous" 2,000x buy at 96.95% carries an expected loss of about 61x your base stake every time you press it, versus roughly 4x per hundred base spins. A slightly better rate on a vastly larger denominator is still a large expected cost. Buying is not a discount and not a scam; it is the same negative-EV product sold in bulk.

What you are really buying: variance and speed

The genuine product is time compression. Feature rounds hold most of a high-volatility slot's win potential, and a buy skips the hundreds of dead spins between them. The result distribution of a single buy is brutal, however: on extreme Nolimit-style math, the median bonus round returns well under the buy price, and the average is rescued by rare huge outcomes. How to check the number yourself

Provider game pages are the first stop; Pragmatic Play publishes per-mode figures for many titles, while some studios list only a single game-wide RTP. The in-game info screen at your casino is the authoritative source, since the same title ships in several RTP versions and the casino picks one: San Quentin, for instance, also exists in a 94.11% build. If the buy screen or paytable shows no separate figure for the feature purchase, price it at the game-wide RTP and treat any claim of a hidden boost as unsupported.

Where buys are not available

Regulation also has a view. Bonus buys are not offered to players in Great Britain: the Gambling Commission's technical standards prohibit features that encourage players to increase their stakes, and studios ship UK builds with the buy button removed. Offshore casinos under Curaçao or Anjouan licenses face no such restriction, which is why crypto casino lobbies are full of buy-enabled versions. • Translate the buy into expected cost: buy price × (1 − RTP). A 100x buy at 96% costs an expected 4 base bets per click.
• Expect the median buy to lose. The average is carried by outcomes you will rarely see.
• Never fund buys by escalating after losing ones, and never use them with an active wagering requirement unless the terms explicitly allow it.
